Welcome to our home! My husband, Lee, and I own and operate a boutique style furniture/home decor store called, Pink Peony Home & Finds! It’s located in historic downtown Troutdale, Oregon! Many of you have mentioned that you would really like to see how I decorate my own home. Life is funny sometimes…I didn’t have a decorated house when we opened our doors. We had just started a remodel and had torn carpet out and ripped up floors. Then we stopped, to open our boutique…
We purchased our home 10 years ago. Lee and I envisioned building our “forever home” on our 15 acre parcel. We planned to get a “replacement dwelling” permit, because the house we bought was super small and built in 1923. It had a lot of wear and tear! We were told that it was a kit home from Sears and Roebuck. This house was ordered out of a catalog, and came by freight train! I cannot even imagine! We moved into this little house with our 2 daughters, all the while thinking this was very temporary! We went from a 4 bedroom, 3 bath home, to a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home. Less than a year later, we were blessed with another baby girl! Then the bottom fell out of the housing market, so we had no option, but to weather the storm in this tiny old Sears and Roebuck house! We had to make the best of it…and we did. However, we didn’t want to dump a bunch of money into a house that we were planning on replacing. That was until we got hooked on the show, FIXER UPPER, on HGTV. We started looking at this little house in a new light and with a new love. I want to share this new found love and our remodeling adventures with you!
I’m starting with our kitchen remodel that we just recently completed. Now this kitchen has been planned out in my mind…and on Pinterest, for quite some time now. Here is a before and after picture of our kitchen:
I had decided to paint the already worn out cabinets black, shortly after moving in, nearly 10 years ago. It is so funny now, but I just had no idea how dark it made our kitchen in doing so. The linoleum floors had been removed before these pictures were taken…so you are looking at old tar paper over mixed matched wood planks. We also had mustard yellow formica counters, that also included a built-in glass cutting board on top of the dishwasher…I know, classy right! I just kept that dream of a white kitchen close to my heart until the right time came!
We started the remodel with some gray/brown bamboo laminates. I loved the warm color, their livability and ease of care…you just CANNOT hurt these floors! They were extremely inexpensive and super easy to install! My amazing Husband and Father-in-Law installed these floors in less than one day. We then went with simple white cabinets with black hardware. I LOVE this clean and simple look! I’ll write more about these cabinets on a later post. Then came the counters…..I really wanted concrete counters. I mean I REALLY wanted concrete counters!! However, after getting some quotes and finding out how hard they are to do yourself, I decided against them. We decided to go with gray quartz counters. I discovered that if you keep them simple and go with their base colors, you can get some beautiful counters for a fraction of the cost of granite or concrete. I ended up going with a concrete color gray quartz and didn’t have any bull-nosing done to the quartz to keep that squared-off edge, like concrete counters would have. Bull-nosing adds a lot to the cost of the counters, so opting out of that detail saved us a lot of money! I am so in love with our kitchen. I wouldn’t change a thing!
